Why I Care

We are born of nature and know, deep inside, that we are inextricably part of it

As human consciousness evolved
– our minds evolved tools, products, technology and the ability to alter nature
– our hearts evolved reverence, respect, responsibility and a capacity to care for nature

We evolved to use, and, to care for: as reflected in creation stories, myths, legends and names for earth and nature as mother

But, in the modern world we are told that destruction is ok: necessary for progress, for economics, for jobs, for wealth
We swallow these beliefs, try and fit in, make a living, and be part of society
To see nature as a smorgasbord of resources to be tamed and used – damage and destruction are merely “externalities”

We sacrifice our heart’s caring on the altars of consumerism and capitalism

But inside we struggle
We know something is wrong
We have a visceral response when viewing destruction of our environment
Primal concern for the wellbeing of place, of nature, of home

In the face of the current world-view, do we honour our inner knowing, our hearts caring?
Allow ourselves to feel what we feel when nature is destroyed?
To take action contrary to the forces that tell us it doesn’t matter; that it’s part of progress.

To be stewards, caretakers, custodians, keepers of nature?
