Time of the First Frost

The initial trauma
The broken trust – betrayal
Helplessness

When we first froze – part of us suspended – lost
That tender part of us
No alternative but to go numb

Long ago, but still frozen
And setting in place a life pattern

Even as we carry on
Blanking out, telling ourselves it didn’t happen, wasn’t that bad, didn’t effect us
That we are OK despite it
Denial survival

As the frost returns in winter
It is time to acknowledge our own freezing
To sit closely with our frozen selves
And warm them with our breath
