Hope

We are the problem solvers
Determined to follow our wilful arc of progress – entitled, defensive
For hundreds of years we have told ourselves we are industrial, we are technological, we are spiritual, we are special

And now we face the consequences of our multiple “solutions”
The growth, denial, socializing of costs for personal gain, and outsourcing of impacts
To another place, country, people – but there is only one earth

With each solution, we have separated farther from Pachamama, from LIFE
We have separated farther from each other, and from our humanity
Proudly independent

We are writing the final chapter of this story
The story of climate crisis, mass extinction, inequity, and injustice
Thinking that these are new problems to solve – dimly realizing that the past fixes, weren’t

This is our legacy – we have changed the world
What we have put in motion is unstoppable – the lag times tell the tale of what is coming
Even more of what we take for granted is going to go away

Time to wake up to how the world is, not how we dreamed it was
Not as the spinners and marketers sold it
Not the false hope that is being peddled all around us

We want to be optimistic, upbeat, happy – but it seems so dark, distressing and paralyzing
Bewildered and terrified, we are being stalked by despair, death and fear
Time to go to the depths to reclaim our humility, our humanity, our love of, and connection to, the natural world

Time to acknowledge where we are and grieve – and there is so much to grieve
In order to truly grieve we must feel – to break the ice we are skating on
To develop our heartbreak capacity

It is important to have hope
But hope is earned, not wished for or imagined; hope acknowledges reality
And it’s easy to confuse hopelessness with helplessness

To earn hope we need the vision of the eagle to see a different pathway
We need to believe in ourselves and our allies as the ones who will create the pathway – not others, governments or corporations
We need the courage to personally seize destiny and take the actions necessary to make a new vision real

Anything is possible, but believing in unfounded miracles is delusional
Deep caring, kindness, love, connection, sacrifice and action are the foundations of hope
It’s up to us
